Handcut Trusses

We saw following the grain to give an irregular effect similar to an axed or pit-sawn beam. We can then finish the surface taking away all saw marks with an adze to leave a smooth faceted surface.

The traditional mortice and tenon joints are pegged using drawbored riven oak pegs.

Handcut Kingpost Truss

Brook Farm Truss

Three trusses including two matching 'smiley' trusses over a new swimming pool. The four curved braces come from the same tree. We also provided hand cut oak purlins and valley rafters to match.

Macclesfield Trusses

Three trusses and associated purlins were fabricated in our yard and then installed as a bare roof frame by Altham Oak & Carpentry in a barn conversion near Macclesfield.
The tie beams and purlins are handcut
.

Oak Trusse tie beams The rest of the truss components are bandsawn
Everything was finished by hand adzing which brings together the two sawing methods of conversion from the log.
The King Posts of these trusses are "waisted" and this is considered a more elegant design.
The tension joint at the bottom of the king post is fixed with a concealed threaded rod.
