Beams

Hand-cut Beams

If you look up in a barn or old building built before the invention of the mechanical saw, you can often see hewn beams that might look like selected natural tree shapes "squared up".

Our hand-cut beams are the modern equivalent of these hewn beams. We use quality oak trees that are too curved for bandsaws to make into long beams. We cut a tree, selected for your purpose, following the grain of the tree.

Our craft produces special orgaincally shaped structural beams,

Curved components can be produced, following agreement on specification. If the curve of the grain follows the curve of the beam it can make a better job under many circumstances

With an adzed finish, our beams are indistinguishable from beams hewn and adzed 400 years ago.

Band-sawn Beams

The majority of the traditional structural timber industry uses this type of timber.

Many combinations of sizes are available and the majority of our beams are cut to order. The timber exhibits a light “texture” across its surface perpendicular to the length of the beam following its passage through the saw.

Band sawn beams are straighter in their length than our hand-cut beams but do not follow the grain /curves of the tree and therefore do not have the same “hewn” appearance. They are also regular in their cross section.

Our band-sawn beams have a useable finish directly after milling and can, if required be installed without further work. Our traditional adze, or the more economical machine adze finishes can be applied to bring out the beauty of the grain, especially if you intend to wax your oak.
