Garden architecture - Croquet Shelter

This garden structure was specified as sheltered seating for a group to chat whilst others played croquet and a refuge for all in case of sudden rain. On a terrace above it is a Japanese garden with large, 100 year old Bonsai trees

The ridge cap is carved out of one curved log like an upside down canoe. The same curved log produced the structural ridge beam underneath the cap and also the eaves beams except with the curve reversed. This one log therefore defines the curves of the oak shingled roof.

The 6 seating positions are formed from 2 of our 3 Kings Woodland Thrones facing each other supported in the crotches of the oak frames rather than on the usual short legs.
The front frame finishes with a large separated Barley Twist carved from one log.

The carved beams made with mortice and tenon “passing” joints mimic Celtic knotwork. Examples of Celtic Knotwork are carved on the beams.
