Dinkley Hall

A 16 th century or earlier cruck hall made uninhabitable by people who cut a doorway through the main cruck blade leaving 1 ½”. It has some original wattle and daub panels.

The new first floor handcut beam is shown and a new spliced foot to the cruck blade to replace the bottom rooted away with damp.

You can imagine the destruction of this blade by the people who cut a doorway at first floor level, through what they thought was a plasterboard partition with a strange bit of wood in it.

The first floor beam was replaced with softwood and packed up, in vain attempts to respond as the building slowly moved towards collapse.

The cruck blade has been replaced to a point beyond the doorway and a replacement strut and lap dovetailed wall plate tie that were previously removed have been refitted. After the blades had been repaired we replaced the softwood floor/tie beam with an oak beam to fit the original housings.

You can see the handcut nature of this beam from this photo
